About COLLEGE OF STRIPTEASE® and The Pink Pussycat of Hollywood
Earn Your Ph. G—as in G-string
It was the sexy, rose-colored room where Frank Sinatra slithered into the seats with the rest of the Rat Pack to watch the most famous burlesque show in the world. It had the stage where Lenny Bruce would appear unannounced to perform a racy comedy set. It was The Pink Pussycat, an extraordinary nightclub that became a world of its own and not only entertained famous people but helped define the social, cultural and sexual mores of an entire era.
COLLEGE OF STRIPTEASE® began as dance instruction for the club’s dancers. The first choreographer hired was Sally Maar, a former showgirl and ballet teacher. Well-known as the mother of Lenny Bruce, Maar was one of a string of first-rate teachers hired by the club. Wally Green, who choreographed Some Like it Hot and Irma La Douce, also worked there. By the time the famous stripper Cindy Valentine was hired, the curriculum included not only dancing, but also how to strip.
The idea went one step further in 1961 with the birth of COLLEGE OF STRIPTEASE®.What sounded like a marketing ploy became a serious educational venture. Sessions were 13-14 weeks, and the tuition was $100. There were no scholarships, but girls who couldn’t afford the tuition were offered “work-study” jobs as waitresses in the club.
After TIME magazine described The Pink Pussycat College of Striptease in its November 10, 1961 issue, interest soared. Within the first year, the college received more than 10,000 applications from around the world.
Classes began with “the history and theory of striptease” and the “psychology of inhibitions.” The students also learned “controlling the structural components of the anatomy,” “dynamic body rotation and oscillation,” and, of course, the “fundamentals of taking-it-off.” The rules were strict: if you didn’t do your homework, you were expelled. At the end of the sessions, graduates earned a Ph. G—as in G-string.
If you’re a college student, working woman, mom, (all of the former) or a nostalgic baby boomer whose lifestyle is modeled on the 1960s and 1970s, this is your institution of higher learning.
